The 1870 Hillsdale City Directory advertised twenty grocery stores within the city at that time.
The H.W. Samm building remained in the same family for a century. On the second floor of this building Mrs. Marie Isley gave piano lessons to the youth of the area.
It wasn’t unusual for markets to advertise their meat and poultry by hanging it so it could be seen by passersby. How would you like to buy it after it had been coated by the road dust and warmed by the sun!!!
