Arlen Gilbert

Arlen Gilbert was a history professor at Hillsdale College for almost 40 years. During that time he served as chairman of the History department from 1963-1970, received Professor of the Year in 1984, Honorary Alumnus in 1992, and Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in 1994. Arlan also was the first occupant of the Grewcock Chair in American History from 1995-1998. He contributed to numerous book reviews in historical journals, was the author of four volumes, and was recognized as a scholar and historian.

Arlen was no slouch as a student. He graduated as valedictorian of Selinsgrove High School in 1951. In 1955, he graduated as valedictorian of Susquehanna University with majors in history and Latin. After receiving his Master’s degree he first taught at the University of Delaware and the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1957-1960

He was a man of deep faith, loyalty, and love for his family and friends. He served his community as a member and elder at the Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church, Hillsdale Salvation Army board member, Hillsdale Rotary Club member and school board member for the Hillsdale Preparatory School. He was also a talented photographer and writer. His generosity was endless and his loyal friendship will be missed by many, especially his breakfast club.

Arlen was, above all, a kind man. His glorious smile and obvious pleasure in his students, family and friends enhanced any gathering.
