Animals

A large herd of shetland ponies that performed with the Gentry Brothers "trained animal exhibition" in Hillsdale on July 25, 1902, was not able to give a performance in Kalamazoo the next week as they were stampeded through the business district of that City by a swarm of mosquitoes.

A number of local bear sightings were reported in the August 13, 1867 issue of the Hillsdale Standard, those being in Cambria and east of Baw Beese Lake.

An 1868 edition of the Hillsdale Standard reported the killing of a large lynx on a farm in Jefferson Township.

In 1891, a skunk farm was started in Camden." Said to be worth millions, but whew!"
